Oral-B Toothbrush Heads: A Better-Value Option That’s Probably OEM Anyway

Replacement Oral-B toothbrush heads are one of those everyday items where the price has crept up so quietly that you do not notice it until you are standing in Tesco or Boots looking at a tiny pack of four for twenty-odd quid. Sometimes closer to thirty quid. When several people in the house use electric toothbrushes, it gets expensive very quickly.

It is no surprise that Amazon is full of alternatives. There are hundreds of compatible heads available for just a few pounds, usually sold by Chinese brands you have never heard of. I have tried plenty of those over the years. Some are too soft, some too stiff, some vibrate noisily, and some simply feel cheap. They work for a short while, but the experience is never quite right. In the end, I always went back to the genuine Oral-B versions despite the price, simply because they were consistent.

We all know all this stuff is made in China, but not all manufacturers are equal. Some churn out cheap and nasty copies for Amazon; some manufacture for big brands and OEMs.

I came across a toothbrush-head manufacturer at a trade fair in China. Not a small stall selling generic copies, but a large factory whose output quietly goes into the supply chains of well-known retailers, including Walmart and several European brands. In other words, the sort of place that produces OEM brush heads, which later appear under different labels.

Their product was noticeably better than the typical low-cost copies. The bristles were even and well finished, the fit on the brush was firm without excess noise, and the overall feel was more in line with the branded supermarket versions. These were not made specially for us. They are a standard high-volume item, repackaged according to each large corporate buyer, which tells you everything you need to know about the tooling and quality control behind them.

I brought some back to try at home. Everyone used them for a while, and they were just fine. They behaved exactly as you would expect an original Oral-B head to behave. No rattling, no harsh stiffness, no flimsy bending. Just a sensible, reliable brush head that feels right and lasts properly. Given the manufacturer’s client list (they sometimes show these at fairs, but we cannot show you – it’s a thing you agree to), I know these are the same heads you see in major retailers under different names.

For Grantleigh, the challenge was how to sell them in a way that made sense for our customers. Selling single packs would make postage a disproportionate part of the cost. Most people want more than one anyway. So we supply them as two packs of four, giving you eight heads in total. That keeps the overall price under ten pounds, delivered by Royal Mail Tracked, and avoids the familiar situation of opening the only packet in the drawer and discovering everyone else in the household needs one too.

While thinking about this, I was reminded why Amazon is full of low-quality copies of everything. A huge portion of every sale on that platform goes to Amazon itself, leaving very little room for manufacturers to use better materials or better tooling. People rarely see this side of it.

This also explains why so many low-cost heads are of dreadful quality. There is simply no budget left to build anything better.

By contrast, buying directly from a manufacturer with real OEM clients allows us to offer something sensibly priced without cutting corners and without giving Amazon a big slice of your money. Which is what we are all about.
